“…Ganj Dareh, in the high Zagros, has the earliest known evidence for goat domestication 7 8 9 , and the foothills of the Zagros mountains have also been argued to have been the site of early farming 3 . In addition, early sites such as Sheikh-e Abad (11.650-9,600 cal BP) provide evidence of early stages of barley cultivation 38 . Were these innovations independent of similar achievements that made up the Neolithic package that North West Anatolians brought into Europe?…”

“…Most previous reviews of Neolithic ecology and fire focus on charred plant remains recovered by water-flotation and screening (Charles, 2008;Zeder, 2009). Published palaeobotanical data on charred plant remains reviewed here include: in the upper Zagros, Ganj Dareh (van Zeist et al, 1986), Tepe Abdul Hossein (Hubbard, 1990;Willcox, 1990) and Sheikh-e Abad (Whitlam et al, 2013); in the piedmont Ali Kosh (Helbaek, 1969), Jarmo (Helbaek, 1960;Watson, 1983) and Chogha Golan (Riehl et al, 2012(Riehl et al, , 2013; the north Mesopotamian steppe at Qermez Dere and M'lefaat (Savard et al, 2006); and in the alluvial plains Chogha Bonut (Miller, 2003). Sites with data from analysis of charred seeds and wood are highlighted in italics, other sites represent here data from charred seeds only.…”

“…Deciduous oaks (Quercus spp.) at the Lakes Zeribar and Van increase very slowly after the Younger Dryas (Litt et al 2009;van Zeist and Bottema 1977;Wick et al 2003), but they were present in relatively high amounts in the coastal regions throughout the Late Glacial and the early Holocene (Wright and Thorpe 2003). While there were obviously regional differences in vegetation development within the Fertile Crescent, the different proxy records from each region are occasionally controversial, particularly moisture availability and the potential access to wild cereal resources.…”
