The planetary role of seagrass conservation

Abstract: Seagrasses are remarkable plants that have adapted to live in a marine environment. They form extensive meadows found globally that bioengineer their local environments and preserve the coastal seascape. With the increasing realization of the planetary emergency that we face, there is growing interest in using seagrasses as a nature-based solution for greenhouse gas mitigation. However, seagrass sensitivity to stressors is acute, and in many places, the risk of loss and degradation persists. If the ecological … Show more

“…In spite of these obstacles, the 60 or so species are among the most widely distributed flowering plants [1][2][3] with current estimates of coverage ranging from 600,000 km 2 4 to a modeled value of 1,6 million km 2 5,6 . Seagrasses fulfill critical ecosystem functions and services including coastal nurseries, nutrient cycling, bacterial suppression, and coastal erosion protection [7][8][9] . Along with mangroves, saltmarshes, and coral reefs, seagrass meadows are among the most biologically productive ecosystems on Earth.…”

“…Moreover, some of the most devastating agricultural weeds in crop fields also are grasses [ 2 ]. Recently, reviews have been made on expounding the grass research and addressing the value of grass diversity in the future human life [ 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 ]. However, the global herbicide resistant weeds found in 267 plant species (154 dicots and 113 monocots) have become a serious problem for agricultural production [ 7 ].…”
