The PISQ-IR: considerations in scale scoring and development

Abstract: The PISQ-IR demonstrates strong psychometric properties in women who are sexually active and acceptable properties in those who are not sexually active. To score the PISQ-IR sub-scales, half of the items must be answered, imputation is not recommended, and either mean calculation or transformed sum methods are recommended. A summary score should not be calculated.

“…As a result of this sensitivity, the decision was made to retain the items for the rest of the psychometric evaluation. For an evaluation of other issues, such as item nonresponse in relationship to the scaling of the PISQ-IR, see the companion to this article [27].…”

“…In brief, mean subscale scores are calculated by summing the valid responses to items in the subscale and then divided by the number of items with valid responses. A transformed sum can also be used to score the PISQ-IR; transformed sums demonstrate more accuracy than mean calculation and are further described elsewhere [27]. For sexually inactive women four separate scores are calculated and for sexually active women six separate subscale scores.…”

“…An excellent example is the IUGA-sponsored project that developed sexual function questionnaires for women with PFDs that could be used across the globe. The Pelvic Organ Prolapse Sexual Function Questionnaire-IUGA revised (PISQ-IR) was developed by an international panel of experts, validated first in English, and now is translated and validated in nine languages [1][2][3].…”
