The Pieper-Zulkowski Pressure Ulcer Knowledge Test

Abstract: The PZ-PUKT has updated content about pressure ulcer prevention/risk, staging, and wound description. Reliability values are highest for the total test. Further use of the instrument in diverse settings will add to reliability testing and may provide direction for determination of a passing cutoff score.

“…Content validity, internal consistency and reliability were evaluated. However, evaluation of the stability of the tool, as well as evaluation of the quality of the multiple-choice items, were lacking (26). The PZ-PUKT was also used in a modified version by Chianca et al (27), Ilesanmi et al (28) and Lawrence et al (29) without re-evaluating the psychometric properties.…”

“…While focusing on the healthcare costs, various countries have included hospital acquired PU (HAPU) rates as a hospital performance indicator with subsequent financial penalties8, which assumes that staffing with skilled nurses can improve the healing rate with a reduced medical cost. [8][9][10] However, none of the authors performed systematic/ rapid reviews in order to identify the value of PCC in PU management (both prevention and treatment). Thus, there is a need to perform a rapid review of this topic because systematic and rapid reviews are two types of studies that speed up evidence translation into practice.…”

“…Deep tissue injuries and Stage I pressure ulcers are frequently missed by nurses because the ulcer does not disrupt the skin's integrity (Aydin & Karadag, 2010). Having accurate, on-going, and up-to-date knowledge regarding pressure ulcer risk, prevention, staging, and treatment is one way to prevent pressure ulcers (Pieper & Zulkowski, 2014).…”
