The Piazza peer data management project

Abstract: A major problem in today's information-driven world is that sharing heterogeneous, semantically rich data is incredibly difficult. Piazza is a peer data management system that enables sharing heterogeneous data in a distributed and scalable way. Piazza assumes the participants to be interested in sharing data, and willing to define pairwise mappings between their schemas. Then, users formulate queries over their preferred schema, and a query answering system expands recursively any mappings relevant to the que… Show more

“…Local-as-view approaches are considered in a number of P2P data management systems, e.g., Piazza [29] that also consider richer mappings to specify views. Update propagation between views is considered in a number of systems, e.g., based on ECA rules in Hyperion [8].…”

“…We create mappings between pairs of schemas to link semantically related vocabulary terms. Mappings are used to identify equivalent terms in the data propagation process (see below Section 4.4), and to reformulate queries iteratively as in a peer data management system [2,32].…”

“…PDMSs integrate data by replacing the cen-tralized mediator by an unstructured network of pairwise schema mappings and by reformulating the queries iteratively from one schema to the others. The complexity of query reformulation in PDMSs is investigated in the context of the Piazza [32] project, while the Hyperion [2] system proposes to use mappings at both the instance and at the schema levels to reformulate queries. PicShark is the first PDMS taking into account probabilistic tuples and supporting the propagation of instances from one database to the others through schema mappings.…”
