The Phytochemical, Antioxidant, Antifungal and Antibacterial Activities of the Aerial Part of Macrophyte Paspalum Repens P. J. Bergius

Abstract:The aerial part of Paspalum repens was herein chemically and biologically assessed. The rosmarinic acid and a mix of the flavonoids quercetin-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside and quercetin-3-O-β-D--E-caffeoyl) glucopyranoside were isolated through chemical investigation. The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated based on their NMR (1D and 2D) data. The crude extract, hexane, ethyl acetate and n-butanol fractions were evaluated for biological activity. The ethyl acetate fraction showed significant DPPH freeradical scavenging activity with CE 50 18.88 ± 0.34 mg.mL − , and total phenols EAT 110.79 mg.mL -1. The crude extract, hexane, ethyl acetate and n-butanol fraction were inactive against the following microorganisms: Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans. The present study is the first one about the herein assessed aquatic plant.Keywords: Antimicrobial; Antioxidant; Paspalum repens; Phenolic content. ResumoNeste trabalho foram realizados estudos químicos e biológicos da parte aérea da macrófita Paspalum repens . A partir da investigação fitoquímica foram isolados o ácido rosmarínico e uma mistura dos flavonoides quercetina 3-O-β-D-glicopiranosideo e quercetina-3-O-β-D--Ecafeoil) glicopiranosideo. As estruturas dos compostos isolados foram elucidadas com base nos seus espectros de RMN de 1 H e 13 C (1D e 2D). O extrato bruto e as frações hexano, acetato de etila e n-butanol foram avaliados biologicamente. A fração acetato de etila mostrou atividade antioxidante significante frente ao radical DPPH com CE 50 18,88 ± 0,34 mg.mL −1 e fenóis totais EAT 110,79 mg.mL −1. O extrato bruto e as frações hexanica, acetato de etila e n-butanol foram inativos contra os micro-organismos Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa e Candida albicans. O presente estudo é o primeiro sobre esta planta aquática.
