The physiological importance of accumulation of cyclitols inViscum albumL.*

Abstract: SUMMARYInvestigations of Viscum album on 16 different host species revealed an endogenous cyclitol pattern with pinitol, 1-O-methyl-wMco-inositol, quebrachitol, c/izVo-inositol, an unidentified O-methyl-inositol and traces of ononitol. Host-specific cyclitols including bornesitol, quercitol, viburnitol, scyllo-inositol and the hexitol, sorbitol, were also stored in the mistletoe. The endogenous cyclitols were accumulated to such high concentrations that they made a large contribution to the osmotic potential. … Show more

“…Polyols have been isolated from plant tissues up to 8.9% leaf DW (Richter and Popp 1992;Streeter et al 2001;Monson et al 2006;Merchant et al 2007) up to 90% of phloem sap carbon (Moing et al 1997) and often more than 50% of the carbon in the xylem sap (Richter and Popp 1992;Popp and Smirnoff 1995;Popp et al 1997). The synthesis of polyols follows strong taxonomical (Bieleski and Briggs 2005;Merchant et al 2007) and ecotypic (Pfundner 1993) patterns and these concentrations fluctuate in response to environmental cues (Vernon and Bohnert 1992;Wanek and Richter 1997;Streeter et al 2001;Merchant et al 2006b).…”

“…Timotiwu and Sakurai 2002) perform important roles for plant function and interaction with the environment. Polyols are highly mobile among plant tissues and are involved in rapid redistributions to satisfy physiological requirements such as bud burst (Popp et al 1997) or the onset of physiological stress (Richter and Popp 1992;Guo and Oosterhuis 1995). In the only known study of its type, polyol synthesis has been shown to occur in plant tissues remote to the location of polyol accumulation (Wanek and Richter 1997), highlighting the importance of whole-plant analysis.…”

“…Viscum, for example, apparently degrades sorbitol absorbed from the host (Richter and Popp 1992;Wanek and Richter 1993). To date, no studies suggest that Cuscuta degrades host metabolites or macromolecules, although the parasite probably has abilities similar to Viscum.…”

“…Kısacası, siklik polialkollerin oranı, soğuk mevsimlerde yaz aylarına oranla 2.9 kat daha fazladır. Bu da, V.album yapraklarındaki osmotik basınca yardımcı olarak, bitkinin soğu ğa karşı korunmasını sağlamaktadır (26,28).…”
