The Physiologic Effect of Contrast Media Used for Angiocardiography

Abstract: The deaths from angiocardiography at Wisconsin General Hospital were reviewed and found to be two per cent of 249 patients. These 5 deaths are reported briefly. Investigation was carried out to determine the hemodynamic effects of contrast substances on 12 dogs. In general, there was a temporary increase in right atrial and pulmonary arterial pressure followed by a rather marked decrease in systemic arterial pressure and tachycardia. The significance of these findings is discussed in relation to shunts within … Show more

“…If the activity within the left ventricle is treated as a point source at the center of the ventricle, the calculated activity A' from the count rate C is given by C A' Sud (4) where d = D + 1/2 T, the depth of the center of the left ventricle. Given a count rate C from the left ventricle, the error in correcting C for attenuation using equation 4 instead of equation 3 is given by…”

“…In response to such injections a transient fall in systemic arterial blood pressure and an increase in heart rate of approximately 2 minutes' duration have been reported in human beings" 2 and in animals. 3 Also, a transient cutaneous erythema is well recognized subsequent to the injection of contrast medium. At the time of this study there are no reports concerning the effects of injections of contrast agents on the serial changes in cardiac output in intact man.…”

“…Contrast media are known to generate such effects on the pulmonary vasculature (2,17,21,39,45). There are several publications dealing with this concept in patients at high risk for pulmonary edema due to cardiac failure or pulmonary hypertension (13,33,38,51,57).…”
