“…Business model innovations in line with Physical Internet concepts are making headway in the market and prospering, as expected from Montreuil et al (2013b). Examples abound, such as on‐demand warehousing (e.g., flexe.com), open‐access fulfillment network services (darkstore.com, sell.amazon.com/fulfillment‐by‐amazon), open access delivery platforms (e.g., roadie.com), as well as freight and logistics marketplaces and apps (coyote.com, freightera.com, colivri, mixmove.io, uber.com/freight).…”

“…Several PI papers have addressed protocols (Montreuil et al 2012; Sarraj et al 2014a) and routing (Ballot et al 2012; Sarraj et al 2014b). As all hubs will be interoperable, a distinct advantage of the Physical Internet would be that virtually all lanes could be trafficked by full trucks, a big reason for the concept’s previously outlined improvements relative to conventional systems.…”

“…The success of horizontal collaboration projects such as CO3 (CO3 Project 2014) and industry‐led collaboration projects (Creemers et al 2017) has inspired the development of the Physical Internet (PI or π; Montreuil 2011; Mervis 2014). PI is an innovative concept using the Digital Internet as a metaphor for shared resources such as transportation and warehousing, with freight encapsulated in PI‐containers (Landschutzer et al 2015; MODULUSHCA 2016) and transported through a standard protocol (Montreuil et al 2012; Ballot et al 2014). Compared with the conventional logistics system, PI represents a radically different system (Ballot et al 2014; Ambra et al 2020) that will force private and public stakeholders to rethink their supply chain strategies.…”

“…The first point is that Lin's study addresses the SSMC issue from the perspective of maximizing space utilization. However, SSMC should show simultaneous sustainability from economic, environmental and social perspectives (Montreuil, 2012). The other point is that the impacts of modular containers on stakeholders’ behavior should be considered when developing approaches to SSMC (Lin et al , 2014).…”
