The physical environment in the City of Light

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The article describes the physical environment found in the other world or the City of Light, based on published accounts of near-death experiences (NDEs). The City of Light appears to be a world of preternatural beauty that cannot be described adequately. NDE accounts provide descrip tions of the landscape, animal life, plant life, and architecture found in the other world.

“…To the Editor: I have just read two articles in the Summer 1993 issue of the Journal on the hierarchies in and physical aspects of the City of Light, so often referred to by near-death experiencers (NDErs) when recounting their experiences. The first is "Social Positions in the City of Light," by Craig Lundahl and Harold Widdison (1993); the second, "The Physical Environment in the City of Light," by Widdison and Lundahl (1993). I must admit to having difficulty understanding the points of both, especially as they each seemed to indicate that NDEs are physical rather than symbolic experiences, that they happen in a physical place ordered with physical rules.…”

“…Melvin Morse has attempted to address this last point in his most recent book (Morse and Perry, 1992), and Lundahl and I have ana lyzed the existing Mormon literature for what the afterlife is like (Widdison and Lundahl, 1993) and for activities and relationships in the afterlife (Lundahl and Widdison, 1993). The other areas of study listed above have been mentioned by various researchers but mainly as side issues.…”

“…Other researchers who had documented NDE ac counts that gave some information on the physical environment in the City of Light included Ray Canning (Lundahl, 1981-82), Karlis Osis and Erlendur Haraldsson (1977), Kenneth Ring (1980), and Michael Sabom and Sarah Kreutziger (Sabom, 1982). In 1993, Harold Widdison and I described the social positions of inhabitants in the City of Light as reported by a limited number of Mormon NDErs and provided more detail about the physical environment in the City of Light (Lundahl and Widdison, 1993;Widdison and Lundahl, 1993). The most detailed description of the social and physical aspects of the City of Light put forth to date was published in our book The Eternal Journey (Lundahl and Widdison, 1997).…”
