The phylogenetic relationship between the Chlamydomonadales and Chlorococcales inferred from 18SrDNA sequence data

Abstract: SUMMARY Nuclear‐encoded small subunit ribosomal RNA gene (185rDNA) sequences were determined for Chlamydomonas moewusii Gerloff and five chlorococcalean algae (Chlorococcum hypnosporum Starr; Chlorococcum oleofaciens Trainor et Bold; Chlorococcum sp.; Tetracystis aeria Brown et Bold; Protosiphon botryoides (Kützingl Klebs). All these algae are characterized by a clockwise CCW) flagellar apparatus. Phylogenetic trees were constructed from sequences from these algae together with 20 green algae. All algae with a… Show more

“…1) and the other group (Ankistrodemus stipitatus, Scenedesmus obliquus, Neochloris aquatica, Pediastrum duplex and Hydrodictyon reticulatum) with directly opposed basal bodies (DO group, Fig. 1) (Lewis et al, 1992;Nakayama et al, 1996).In the present study, the ulvophycean taxa formed a monophyletic group in all analyses. Distance methods and maximum-parsimony analysis consistently positioned the taxa of the Trentepohliales within this ulvophycean clade.…”

“…Though Dunaliella salina is often described as naked or wall-less, electron micrographs revealed the existence of a fibrous extracelular matrix on the cell surface, mainly consists of polysaccharides (Nakayama et al, 1996). It is thought that the production of these exopolysaccharides is an additional mechanisms to keep the cells safe from salinity (Abbasi and Amiri, 2008;Mishra and Jha, 2009).…”
