The phylogenetic position of Aglaodorum Schott (Araceae – Aroideae – Aglaonemateae)

Abstract: Analysis of chloroplast DNA sequences (trnL intron and trnL-trnF intergenic spacer) of the helophytic colony-forming Aglaodorum griffithii (Schott) Schott and other representative species of Araceae supported its placement within Aglaonema Schott. It is therefore proposed that Aglaodorum Schott should be recognised as a generic synonym of Aglaonema.

“…Total genomic DNA was extracted from fresh leaf material of T. rhizomatosum using the GeneJET Genomic DNA Purification Column & Collection Tube (Thermo Fisher Scientific, USA). Sequences of the chloroplast loci of the new taxon were amplified and sequenced using the protocol described in Van et al (2020). The used primers are shown in Table 1.…”

“…These three genera comprise the Nephthytideae which is sister to the SE Asian tribe Aglaonemateae Engl. (Cabrera et al, 2008), consisting of Aglaonema Schott ( Van et al, 2020). Both groups share adjacent male and female flower zones, free stamens, and collenchyma arranged in threads peripheral to the vascular strands of leaf blades and petioles (with the exception of Nephthytis, in which collenchyma can form interrupted bands (Keating, 2002;Cabrera et al, 2008).…”
