The photochemistry of rhenium(i) tricarbonyl N-heterocyclic carbene complexes

Abstract: The photophysical and photochemical properties of the new tricarbonyl rhenium(I) complexes bound to N-heterocyclic carbene ligands (NHC), fac-[Re(CO)3(N^C)X] (N^C = 1-phenyl-3-(2-pyridyl)imidazole or 1-quinolinyl-3-(2-pyridyl)imidazole; X = Cl or Br), are reported. The photophysics of these complexes highlight phosphorescent emission from triplet metal-to-ligand ((3)MLCT) excited states, typical of tricarbonyl rhenium(I) complexes, with the pyridyl-bound species displaying a ten-fold shorter excited state life… Show more

“…We and others have been recently interested in the investigation of the photochemical properties of rhenium complexes bound to N‐heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands . Surprisingly, this relatively new class of complexes has never been assessed in a biological context, either as luminescent cellular markers or anticancer agents.…”

“…ReZolve-L1 ™ is a phosphorescent transition metal complex that exhibits a long excitation half-life, in the order of hundreds of nanoseconds, long photostability, and has a large Stokes shift of ca 200 nm, which are ideal features for cellular imaging [42]. ReZolve-L1 ™ can be used with two photon microscopy allowing flexibility of sample preparation as well as less cell damage and greater sample penetration, due to the use of lower energy excitation (NB.…”
