The Photocatalytic Activity of Titania Coatings Produced by Electrochemical and Chemical Oxidation of Ti6Al4V Substrate, Estimated According to ISO 10678:2010

Abstract: The last twenty years have been a period of intense investigations of materials based on titanium dioxide, which have unique properties and functionalities, and which can be used in various areas of medicine. As a part of this issue, the results of our works for the assessment of the photocatalytic activity of titanium dioxide nanocoatings of different nanoarchitecture (nanoporous, nanotubular, nanosponge-like and nanofibrous examples), which were earlier checked in terms of their biocompatibility and usabilit… Show more

“…The photocatalytic activity of the (PA + TOCs) systems, with TOCs ( 1 )–( 4 ), was estimated on the basis of the photodecolorization process of the methylene blue (MB) solution irradiated in the UVA range, according to the ISO 10678:2010 procedure [ 38 , 39 ]. The changes of MB concentrations versus irradiation times for the studied (PMMA + TOCs) composites and the reaction observed rate constants are presented in Figure 7 and Table 5 .…”

“…The photocatalytic activity of PMMA + TOCs foils (TOCs = (1)-( 4)) was studied by monitoring the degradation processes of MB aqueous solution according to ISO 10678:2010 procedure and, also, Rhodamine B (RhB) solution [38][39][40]. Foil samples of sizes 10 × 10 mm were preconditioned by exposure to UVA or Vis light for 30 h. In the next step, foils were placed in quartz cuvettes with both dye solutions (V = 3.5 cm 3 and C = 2.0 × 10 −5 M).…”

“…Its main advantage is complete on-site pollutant mineralization without requiring additional storage equipment. The use of singlecomponent photocatalysts such as TiO 2 [17,18], SnO 2 [19], CuO [20,21], and Ag 2 O [22,23], induce limitations in terms of light absorbance spectrum or chemical stability. Studies have shown that heterostructures such as TiO 2 /MnO 2 [24], Cu x O/TiO 2 [25], TiO 2 /SiO 2 [26,27], Ag 2 O/TiO 2 [28], and ZnO/WO 3 [29] are able to efficiently separate the charge carriers in order to reduce recombination, increase charge mobility and use an extended light spectrum.…”

“…All experiments were carried out using Ti6Al4V alloy (marked as T, grade 5, 99.7% purity) (Strem Chemicals Inc., Bischheim, France), a foil of 0.2 mm thickness, as a base substrate, which was cut into strips of 6 mm wide and 100 mm long. In the first stage, the surface of T substrates was modified by manufacturing TiO 2 nanoporous (T5) coatings and TiO 2 nanofiber (TNF6 and TNF72), and titanate (T5-S and T-S) types, according to methods previously described (all acronyms used in this article are consistent with those used to mark samples in earlier works) [ 10 , 11 , 38 , 39 , 40 ]. Before the next stages of the research, the samples were structurally and morphologically characterized.…”
