Crystal structure, electronic, bonding and optical properties of monoclinic and trigonal phases of LiBaPO4 compound have been explored using the density functional theory based orthogonalized linear combination of atomic orbitals method. The outcomes of band structure and density of states reveal the insulating direct band gap (E g = 4.62 eV) and semiconducting indirect band gap (E g = 1.12 eV) natures of monoclinic and trigonal phases respectively. The highest bond order and shortest bond length of P–O bond disclose its highest strength over Ba–O and Li–O bonds in both phases of LiBaPO4. with %BO values of 53.20 and 59.34 in M-LiBaPO4 and T-LiBaPO4 respectively. Optical properties in the form of dielectric function, refractive index, optical conductivity and electron energy loss function have been comprehensively described. Dielectric studies demonstrate that the trigonal phase may find its use as a photovoltaic material for solar cell applications.

Phosphorus compounds bearing chirality on the P-center are usually qualified as P-chirogenic or P-stereogenic. This chemical class concerns natural products, agrochemistry, molecular materials, biology and pharmacy, although it is certainly in coordination chemistry and in asymmetric catalysis using chiral transition metal complexes that P-chirogenic phosphorus compounds are the most used. The chiral phosphine ligands and their uses in asymmetric metal-catalyzed reactions have been widely reviewed in literature. However, an overview covering the applications as well as the stereoselective syntheses of all classes of phosphorus compounds has not yet been provided. This review reports the best stereoselective or asymmetric syntheses, the most efficient P*-building blocks and functionalisation of P-chirogenic compounds, in the light of chiral phosphorus compound applications. It is an extensive and useful documentation from pioneering work to recent advances in phosphorus stereochemistry.

Calcium phosphates (CaPs) and their substituted derivatives encompass a large number of compounds with a vast presence in nature that have aroused a great interest for decades. In particular, hydroxyapatite (HAp, Ca10(OH)2(PO4)6) is the most abundant CaP mineral and is significant in the biological world, at least in part due to being a major compound in bones and teeth. HAp exhibits excellent properties, such as safety, stability, hardness, biocompatibility, and osteoconductivity, among others. Even some of its drawbacks, such as its fragility, can be redirected thanks to another essential feature: its great versatility. This is based on the compound’s tendency to undergo substitutions of its constituent ions and to incorporate or anchor new molecules on its surface and pores. Thus, its affinity for biomolecules makes it an optimal compound for multiple applications, mainly, but not only, in biological and biomedical fields. The present review provides a chemical and structural context to explain the affinity of HAp for biomolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids to generate hybrid materials. A size-dependent criterium of increasing complexity is applied, ranging from amino acids/nucleobases to the corresponding macromolecules. The incorporation of metal ions or metal complexes into these functionalized compounds is also discussed.
