The Phosphate Starvation Stimulon ofCorynebacterium glutamicumDetermined by DNA Microarray Analyses

Abstract: The phosphate (P i ) starvation stimulon of Corynebacterium glutamicum was characterized by global gene expression analysis by using DNA microarrays. Hierarchical cluster analysis of the genes showing altered expression 10 to 180 min after a shift from P i -sufficient to P i -limiting conditions led to identification of five groups comprising 92 genes. Four of these groups included genes which are not directly involved in P metabolism and changed expression presumably due to the reduced growth rate observed af… Show more

“…Ribosomal proteins may have various functions apart from ribosome and protein synthesis (Wool, 1996). Downregulation of ribosomal proteins has been linked to various stress responses as well to a decrease of cellular growth (Ishige et al, 2003;Stintzi, 2003;Silberbach and Burkovski, 2006). Moreover, de Carvalho et al (2010) recently reported antimicrobial activities of ribosomal proteins.…”

“…For example, expression of the pst operon in MTB is not induced upon macrophage infection (19), unlike in Salmonella typhimurium (24). In contrast to the related actinomycete Corynebacterium glutamicum (25), these genes were not induced upon phosphate starvation in vitro but were constitutively expressed in both phosphate-sufficient and limiting conditions, as assessed by quantitative PCR (data not shown). Regulation may occur at the protein level, because secretion of PstS3 protein is induced upon in vitro phosphate starvation in M. bovis bacillus Calmette-Guérin (26).…”

“…Ribosomal proteins are essential for de novo synthesis of proteins (Brodersen and Nissen, 2005;Wilson and Nierhaus, 2005). Their downregulation has been linked to various stress experiences (Ishige et al, 2003;Lawrence et al, 2004;Silberbach et al, 2005;Silberbach and Burkovski, 2006) and a decrease of cellular growth (Stintzi, 2003). Genes Cf_3502 and Cf_2039, in clusters P and Q, respectively, encode two Csb proteins (Akbar et al, 1999;Prágai and Harwood, 2002).…”
