The Phonological Similarity Pattern of Words Contributing to Expressive Vocabulary in 18- to 36-Month-Old Toddlers

The evaluation of speech and language is crucial for children with normal hearing (NH) and hearing loss (HL). The aim of this study was to investigate the early communicative skills of children with NH and HL and to compare the performance depending on chronological age (CA) and hearing age (HA). Methods: Four tools, Korean MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories (K M-B CDI), Sequenced Language Scale for Infants (SELSI), Communication and Symbolic Behavior Scales Developmental Profile (CSBS DP) checklist and behavior sample were used. The data was collected from 50 children, 26 NH and 24 HL from 4 to 56 months of age. The average age of NH and HL groups was between 17-and 19-months-old, respectively. The HA of the HL group was 13-months-old. They were tested every two to three months. The developmental progress was analyzed by CA and HA. Results: With K M-B CDI, when CA and HA were compared for the HL group, the production of expressive language did not show any difference, but the receptive language and action-gesture scores were significantly better in HA at 7-9 months and 19-24 months. With SELSI, both receptive and expressive languages showed significantly better scores in HA (F(1,73) = 0.580, p < .05, F(1,73) = 11.036, p < .05). With CSBS DP, the HA showed significantly better social scores for checklist (F(1,63) = 6.248, p < .05). Conclusion: As the HA of the HL group showed superior performance compared to the corresponding age of the NH group even in the early stage, the effectiveness of HA following fitting of amplification device and the appropriate intervention has been implicated.

This study examined whether there is a significant relationship between Korean Brief Parent Report (KBPR) and Working Memory (phonological loop, episodic buffer); and investigated the significant predictor of children's language ability. Methods: A total of 52 children from 4 to 6 years old participated in this study composed of children with Specific Language Impairment (SLI), and typically developing (TD) children. Experimental tasks including KBPR, Non-Word Repetition (NWR), Word List Recall and a Symmetric-Asymmetric Matrix were used. One-way ANOVA, correlational, and multiple stepwise regression analysis were used. Results: 1) There was a significant difference between groups in section B (Current abilities) and C (Behavior patterns and activity preferences). 2) There was a statistically significant difference in phonological loop and linguistic episodic buffer (EB). 3) The correlation between each section score of KBPR and working memory in the TD group showed consistent linguistic sentential order in the EB task with all the other sections except for section A. In the SLI group, section A had correlation with phonological loop, section B had correlation with linguistic EB, and section C had correlation with non-linguistic EB 4) The most significant predictor of the KBPR total score in the TD group was linguistic sentential order EB, and in the SLI group was phonological loop. Conclusion: Both the KBPR score and working memory task competency of the SLI and TD groups showed significant differences. In addition, the meaningful predictor in the total score of KBPR in each group respectively was NWR in the SLI group and linguistic sentential order EB in the TD group.

Research Trends Regarding Language Development and Language Impairment of Infancy and Toddlerhood: From 2012 to 2021

Objectives: This study aims to examine Korean and English research trends regarding language development and language impairment, and to suggest future directions for later research. Methods: Sixty-five Korean research papers published in Communication Science & Disorders and 129 English research published in the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research were classified according to the subject, time dimension, observational method, independent variable, and dependent variable. The frequency and rate of publication of each type were yielded. Results: Nearly half of the subjects were typically developing toddlers, but there were some differences between the research in the two journals. Cross-sectional studies had higher rates in Korean research, and longitudinal studies had higher rates in English research. In Korean journals, most articles were descriptive studies, with very few experimental studies. In English journals, various independent variables were used relatively evenly, whereas the variables related to the characteristics of the subject were used at higher rates in the Korean journals. Both journals mostly used variables associated with expressive language as dependent variables. Conclusion: Although more research has been published and the types of studies have become more diverse than in the past, during the recent decade in Korea the amount and types of studies are limited when compared to English research. In this regard, this study discussed the direction in which future research related to infant language disorder should proceed.
