Abstract-It is generally accepted that the ability to develop large-scale distributed applications that are extensible and independent of infrastructure details has lagged seriously behind other developments in cyberinfrastructure. As the sophistication and scale of distributed infrastructure increases, the complexity of successfully developing and deploying distributed applications increases both quantitatively and in qualitatively newer ways. In this manuscript, we trace the evolution of a representative set of "state-of-the-art" distributed applications and production infrastructure; in doing so we aim to provide insight into the evolving sophistication of distributed applications -from simple generalizations of legacy static high-performance to applications composed of multiple loosely-coupled and dynamic components. The ultimate aim of this work is to highlight that even accounting for the fact that developing applications for distributed infrastructure is a difficult undertaking, there are suspiciously few novel and interesting distributed applications that utilize production Grid infrastructure. Along the way, we aim to provide an appreciation for the fact that developing distributed applications and the theory and practise of production Grid infrastructure have often not progressed in phase. Progress in the next phase and generation of distributed applications will require stronger coupling between the design and implementation of production infrastructure and the theory of distributed applications, including but not limited to explicit support for distributed application usage modes and advances that enable distributed applications to scale-out.

Over recent years’ large‐scale distributed synthetic environment enterprises have been evolving in a diverse range of scientific and engineering fields. These computer modelling and simulation systems are increasing in scale and dimension in order to allow scientists and engineers to explore the attributes and emergent properties of a given system design. Within the field of computational science, the grid facilitates very large‐scale collaborative simulation enterprises. The grid is similar to distributed interactive simulation/high level architecture (DIS/HLA) in that it supports interconnectivity but differs in the sense that it supports intercommunication of large super computing resources. An important factor in the rapid adoption of the grid has been its role in enabling access to significant supercomputing resources not usually available at a single institution. However, the major challenge for the grid has been the lack of an effective and ubiquitous interface to the huge computational resource (which can comprise over 6000 CPUs distributed across the globe) at any time and from any location. This paper describes a unique user interface built on systems engineering principles and practices to solve the problem of delivering real‐time interaction (from lightweight computing devices such as personal digital assistants, commonly known as tablet devices, to high end computing platforms) with simulations delivering high resolution 3D images. The application of our work has far reaching benefits for many sectors including: aerospace, medical informatics, engineering design, distributed simulation, and modelling.

This paper describes a conceptual model for attribute aggregation that allows a service provider (SP) to authorise a user's access request based on attributes asserted by multiple identity providers (IdPs), when the user is known by different identities at each of the IdPs. The user only needs to authenticate to one of the IdPs and the SP is given an overall level of assurance (LoA) about the authenticity of the user and his/her attributes. The model employs a new component called a Linking Service (LS), which is a trusted third party under the control of the user, whose purpose is to link together the different IdP accounts that hold a user's attributes, along with their respective LoAs. There are several possible interaction models for communications between the IdPs, the SP, LSs and the user, and each are described. The model is underpinned with a fully specified trust model, which also describes the implications when participants do not fully trust each other as required. Finally, the paper describes how the model has been implemented by mapping onto existing standard protocols based on SAMLv2.
