The Philosophy of TeraGrid: Building an Open, Extensible, Distributed TeraScale Facility

Abstract: TeraGrid will provide a unique distributed resource with over 13 Teraflops of computing capability, nearly 1 Petabyte of online storage, and dedicated Teraflops clusters for visualization and data collection analysis. TeraGrid will be integrated using a suite of grid and middleware software technologies anchored by the Globus Toolkit, with a design objective toward an open, extensible architecture that can be expanded or duplicated, based on protocols and standards to promote interoperability. Catlett will pro… Show more

“…Interestingly, similar PGI models exist in Europe, where DEISA and EGEE are the counterparts to the TeraGrid and OSG, respectively. 1) TeraGrid: The TeraGrid [2] is an open scientific discovery infrastructure combining leadership class resources at eleven partner sites to create an integrated, persistent computational resource. It began in 2001 when the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) made an award to four centers to establish a Distributed Terascale Facility (DTF).…”

“…To address this need the UK e-Science RealityGrid project (http://realitygrid.org) undertook computational studies at atomistic and mesoscale levels with the goal of improving simulation productivity by enhancing the scientist/engineer's interaction with the underlying computational model. To demonstrate the gains in increased computational power, RealityGrid was linked to the US TeraGrid (Catlett 2002;Pickles, Blake et al 2004) to employ over 6000 distributed central processing nodes. Prior to the introduction of the grid such computing jobs would typically take days or weeks to complete.…”

“…Practical examples abound, such as the Tera-Grid VO [1], the In-Common Federation [2] and the UK Access Management Federation for Education and Research [14]. Microsoft has added identity federation into its latest Vista operating system with Cardspace [3].…”
