Abstract-Diagrams are used in many areas of study to depict knowledge and to assist in understanding of problems. This paper aims to utilize schematic representation to facilitate understanding of certain philosophical works; specifically, it is an attempt, albeit tentative, to schematize A. N. Whitehead's ontological approach. It targets professionals and students in fields outside of philosophy such as computer science and engineering, who often look to sources in philosophy for design ideas or for a critical framework for practice. Yet students in such fields struggle to navigate thinkers' writings. The paper employs schematization as an apparatus of specification for clarifying philosophical language by describing philosophical ideas in a form familiar to computer science. The resultant highlevel representation seems to be a viable tool for enhancing the relationship between philosophy and computer science, especially in computer science education.

This paper addresses the problem of upgrading functional information to knowledge. Functional information is defined as syntactically wellformed, meaningful and collectively opaque data. Its use in the formal epistemology of information theories is crucial to solve the debate on the veridical nature of information, and it represents the companion notion to standard strongly semantic information, defined as well-formed, meaningful and true data. The formal framework, on which the definitions are based, uses a contextual version of the verificationist principle of truth in order to connect functional to semantic information, avoiding Gettierization and decoupling from true informational contents. The upgrade operation from functional information uses the machinery of epistemic modalities in order to add data localization and accessibility as its main properties. We show in this way the conceptual worthiness of this notion for issues in contemporary epistemology debates, such as the explanation of knowledge process acquisition from information retrieval systems, and open data repositories.

Why Separation Logic Works

One might poetically muse that computers have the essence both of logic and machines. Through the case of the history of Separation Logic, we explore how this assertion is more than idle poetry. Separation Logic works because it merges the software engineer's conceptual model of a program's manipulation of computer memory with the logical model that interprets what sentences in the logic are true, and because it has a proof theory which aids in the crucial problem of scaling the reasoning task. Scalability is a central problem, and some would even say the central problem, in applications of logic in computer science. Separation Logic is an interesting case because of its widespread success in verification tools. For these two senses of model-the engineering/conceptual and the logical-to merge in a genuine sense, each must maintain their norms of use from their home disciplines. When this occurs, both the logic and engineering benefit greatly. Seeking this intersection of two different senses of model provides a strategy for how computer scientists and logicians may be successful. Furthermore, the history of Separation Logic for analysing programs provides a novel case for philosophers of science of how software engineers and computer scientists develop models and the components of such models. We provide three contributions: an exploration of the extent of models merging that is necessary for success in computer science; an introduction to the technical details of Separation Logic, which can be used for reasoning about other exhaustible resources; and an introduction to (a subset of) the problems, process, and results of computer scientists for those outside the field.
