The phenolic fraction of extra virgin olive oil modulates the activation and the inflammatory response of T cells from patients with systemic lupus erythematosus and healthy donors

Abstract: PE modulates cytokine production and attenuates induced T-cell activation, probably through NF-κB signaling pathway, providing the first evidence that PE from EVOO has an anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory role in SLE patients and it might therefore be considered as a dietary complement in SLE management.

“…In a mouse model of 2,6,10,14‐tetramethylpentadecan‐induced systemic lupus erythematosus, application of phenol‐enriched EVOO led to a decrease in kidney damage along with reduced renal levels of MMP3 and PGE 2 (Menicacci, Cipriani, Margheri, Mocali, & Giovannelli, ). Furthermore, incubation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells harvested from systemic lupus erythematosus patients with a phenolic fraction of EVOO resulted in a reduced synthesis of the pro‐inflammatory cytokines TNF‐α, IL‐1β, and IL‐6 with concomitant increase in IL‐10 production (Aparicio‐Soto et al, ).…”

“…Increase interest is going on OIL effect on inflammatory diseases, significant role is played by phenolics extract of EVOO in Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) disease this multiorgan disease is characterized by chronic deregulation of immune system which is due to multiple cytokines (B lymphocyte stimulator, IL-17, interferon and IL-6) inequal production and altered response of T-cells [10,49].…”

“…Production of cytokines and reduces induced activation of T-cell controlled by phenolic extract from extra virgin olive oil probably through nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kB) pathway signaling, in this way first immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory evidence of EVOO in immune inflammatory Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) disease is shown [10].…”
