The phase equilibria in the Nd–Ti–Si ternary system at 773K

Abstract: a b s t r a c tThe phase relations in the Nd-Ti-Si ternary system at 773 K have been investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), differential thermal analysis (DTA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with energy dispersive analysis (EDX). It consists of 14 single-phase regions, 25 two-phase regions and 12 three-phase regions. No ternary compounds were observed in this work. The phase equilibria confirm the existence of two binary compounds: Nd 3 Si 4 (space group: Cmcm, a = 0.4360(1), b = 2.46… Show more

“…The results indicate that the compound Ti 5 Si 3 has a homogeneity range extending from about 37 to 38 at.% Si at 773 K, which has also been confirmed in our previous work [5,6], and the homogeneity range of CeSi 2 stretches from 63.5 to 66.7 at.% Si. Moreover, the other intermediate compounds in the ternary Ce-Ti-Si system do not find a remarkable solid solution at 773 K.…”

“…In Refs. [4][5][6][7][8], the phase relation investigation of the (La, Nd, Pr, Gd and Dy)-Ti-Si ternary systems have been reported respectively by means of experimental methods. As a part of the systematic study, the investigation of the Ce-Ti-Si ternary system has not been reported yet.…”

“…2a that bulky Ti 5 Si 3 prefers to nucleate and grow by adhering to the Nd particles, which implies that Nd also works as heterogeneous crystal nucleus due the similar hexagonal structure. According to the phase diagram of Ti-Si-Nd system [19], most Nd solidifies as a single phase due to the phase equilibrium thermodynamic reason, while only small amount of Nd 5 Si 3 is formed in the present investigated alloys. Thus most of the Ti 5 Si 3 particles nucleate on the Nd surface instead of Nd 5 Si 3 .…”
