The perspective of African-American breast cancer survivor-advocates

Abstract: Polyglycerol (PG) and polytriethanolamine(PTEA) have been prepared. The electrical resistivity (ρ) and the optical absorption of polyvinylacetate (PVAc) doped with polyglycerol (PG), polyaniline (PA), and polytriethanolamine (PTEA) have been studied. It was found that the conduction was mainly ionic in the temperature range from 20 to 120°C. The resistivity decreased with the increase of the dopant cocentration. The optical absorption spectra were determined in the wavelength range 400–2500 nm. The analysis of… Show more

“…Other participants constructed their risk around diet, alcohol intake, travel history, place of residence and smoking status. In common with previous studies (Henderson et al 2003, Lythcott et al 2003, Payne et al 2003, some believed their condition was a result of God's will: 'Maybe (. .…”

“…In common with studies investigating beliefs within other ethnic minority groups in the UK (Dein 2004), and some American studies (Lythcott et al 2003, Wolff et al 2003, Ashing-Giwa et al 2004, Ló pez et al 2005, Shokar et al 2005, cancer fatalism (the belief in inevitable death following a cancer diagnosis) was found to be present. Often acknowledged as a view held before contact with medical services, cancer fatalism was principally found among elderly respondents.…”

“…In addition, the study examined how a person's level of identification with the survivor sharing her story might mediate these effects. Because of racial disparities in breast cancer mortality [5] and the particular need for involving more minority breast cancer survivors in cancer control efforts [6,7], the survivors who shared their stories and the women who watched them were all African Americans.…”

“…Research that specifically focused on African American cancer survivors criticized the overuse of technical language during the medical encounter [10,14]. In addition, some older African American cancer survivors report feelings of mistrust as it relates to the medical and research community based on historical evidence of scientific misconduct [2,15].…”
