The investigation of novel sample matrices in the forensic sciences offers several possible advantages, such as allowing for results to be obtained in cases where common sample types are absent. This review focuses on the application of gas chromatography and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) for the determination of drugs in alternative sample matrices, including hair, sweat, meconium, breast milk, and vitreous humour. Less common sample types are also reported including air, cerumen, insects, and their larvae and pupae. The application of pyrolysis GC-MS (Py GC-MS) is also reviewed, showing the possibility of determining high molecular weight drugs which would commonly be unattainable by GC-MS. The application of Py GC-MS for the simulation and investigation of the underlying chemistry and the products formed in the smoking of drugs is also reported.

Magnetic Nanoparticle-Based Surface-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Mass Spectrometry for Cosmetics Detection in Contaminated Fingermarks: Magnetic Recovery and Surface Roughness

In this work, we propose a matrix-free approach for the analysis of fingermarks (FMs) contaminated with five cosmetic products containing different active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) using surface-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (SALDI-MS). For this purpose, a magnetic SALDI substrate based on Fe3O4–CeO2 magnetic nanoparticles was prepared, characterized, and optimized for the analysis of contaminated FMs without sample pretreatment. Initially, groomed FM and cosmetic products were separately analyzed, and their major components were successfully detected. Subsequently, FMs contaminated with Ordinary serum and Skinoren, Dermovate, Bepanthen, and Eucerin creams were analyzed, and components of FM and cosmetics were detected. The stability of the cosmetics in FMs was studied over an interval of 28 days, and all components showed good stability in FM for 4 weeks. Recovery of contaminated FMs from different surfaces utilizing a few microliters of the magnetic substrate was carried out using a simple external magnetic field from ceramic, plastic, metal, and glass. Successful retrieval of the API and FM components was achieved with magnetic recovery, and glass exhibited the best recovery, whereas ceramic tile demonstrated the lowest recovery. This was supported by atomic force microscopy study, which revealed that the ceramic surface had higher roughness than the other surfaces employed in this study, which adversely affected the magnetic maneuvering. This proof-of-concept investigation extends the application of SALDI-MS in forensic analysis of contaminated FMs by exploring cosmetics as exogenous materials and their stability and recovery from different surfaces.

Cosmetics such as makeup or other personal products are widely used and easily transferred upon physical contact. As such, they may be used as trace evidence to link people to each other or to places in criminal investigations. To maximize their probative value, it is important to understand the variability among representative market products and the way in which they transfer to, or persist on various surfaces. Additionally, it is required that analysis techniques be non‐destructive, readily available and relatively inexpensive. Raman spectroscopy and attenuated total reflectance—Fourier transform infrared (ATR‐FTIR) are powerful tools for probing the chemistry of trace cosmetics. As well as fitting the criteria above, they offer the capability of studying a wide range of sample types with minimal prior preparation. The complementary information derived from these techniques can help analysts to understand and visualize spectral variability, potentially enabling discrimination between samples. However, the move from academic research toward forensic casework is not without challenges.
