The Perplexus bio-inspired reconfigurable circuit

Abstract: This paper introduces the ubichip, a custom reconfigurable electronic device capable of implementing bioinspired circuits featuring growth, learning, and evolution. The ubichip is developed in the framework of Perplexus, a European project that aims to develop a scalable hardware platform made of bio-inspired custom reconfigurable devices for simulating large-scale complex systems. In this paper, we describe the configurability and architectural mechanisms that will allow the implementation of evolvable and de… Show more

“…Taking into account the differences between real world, biological and digital systems, the Logic Systems Laboratory from Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, EPFL Lausanne, developed a bio-inspired system architecture, founded on four level of organizing, similar to figure 1 [4], [5]. This is a POE-type (Phylogeny, Ontogeny and Epigenesis) embryonic system developed in analogy with the evolutionary processes of biological systems.…”

“…Several research groups have focused on this area for many years, resulting in novel bio-inspired architectures such as the POEtic tissue [2] and the Ubichip of Perplexus project [3], as well as formalisms such as PI-Calculus, Bi-Graphs [4] and Brane Computing [5]. Systemic computation is a similar attempt to exploit desirable natural properties such as parallelism within a computer, developed in 2005 [1].…”
