The Peripheral Cannulation Technique in Minimally Invasive Congenital Cardiac Surgery

Abstract: Congenital minimally invasive cardiac surgery has gained wide acceptance thanks to its favorable outcomes. The introduction of peripheral cannulation for cardiopulmonary bypass further reduces surgical trauma by decreasing surgical access and allowing the spectrum of surgical access for the correction of simple congenital heart defects to be widened. Right internal jugular vein percutaneous cannulation, together with the direct surgical cannulation of femoral vessels, proves to be a safe and effective tool in … Show more

“…Vida and col. suggests that right jugular vein cannulation and femoral artery open surgery cannulation is the optimal choice for patients above 15 kg. (16) The same study suggests that peripheric cannulation decreases the amount of surgical stress. Reeb and col. suggests that peripheric cannulation is practical for elective or emergency ECMO applications.…”

“…We feel that appropriate debridement rather than prosthesis selection determines outcome in patients with aortic root abscess. Jassar et al reported similar rates of reinfection and reoperation in 134 patients who had aortic root replacement using either cryopreserved homograft, biological or mechanical valved conduits [47].…”

“…This allowed to minimize surgical trauma while maintaining functional results [3]. The introduction of peripheral cannulation for CPB has further minimized the surgical access and expanded the spectrum of CHD that can be addressed with these techniques [4].…”

“…Over the past decade, surgical correction of less severe congenital heart disease (CHD) such as ASD has been increasingly performed through minimally invasive less traumatic surgical approaches [3,4]. In particular, the advantage of total or partial peripheral cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) includes the possibility of avoiding IVC snaring during CPB.…”
