The performance of network-controlled mobile data offloading from LTE to WiFi networks

Abstract: Global mobile data traffic consumption and usage continues to increase rapidly leading to congested networks. Currently, cellular networks are overloaded with mobile data traffic due to the rapid growth of mobile broadband subscriptions and the increasing popularity of diversified applications for smartphones with multiple wireless interfaces and the flat-rate pricing model of cellular networks. One possible practical solution to alleviate this problem is the offloading of mobile data traffic from the primary … Show more

“…Nonetheless they are low cost. The installation of femtocells is like a plug and play device which requires a little planning, as it has a built-in self-configuration which minimizes the impact on the macrocells through selfprovisioning (Hagos, 2015).…”

“…So far, the amount of data to be offloaded and shared is focused and determined, however, there is no solution provided to elect an efficient AP. This problem was addressed in [28][29][30] with the help of Access Network Discovery and Selection Function (ANDSF) module located in Evolved Packet Core (EPC). ANDSF server is made responsible for to suggest efficient non-3GPP access network by considering parameters like Signal to Interference Noise Ratio (SINR), channel gain, cell load etc.…”

“…Mobile terminal devices select optimal WIFI integration schemes as required. At present, the proposed LTE-WIFI fusion scheme has Dynamic Backhaul Sensitive Network Selection Schemes [24], Access Network Discovery and Selection Function (ANDSF) [12] etc. They operate with the LTE technology in areas beyond the coverage of the WIFI network, but automatically connect to WIFI if possible.…”
