As a child of deaf adults (CODA), this article traces my journey in the field of psychology and deafness, and points the way to developing a more culturally and socially responsive psychology that will be fully inclusive for deaf people. My lived experience as a CODA and the long-standing tension between the scientific, clinical, and applied aspects of psychology are described in detail. I document the early misguided conceptions about deafness which permeated my own career path involving psychology, research, teaching, administration, and advocacy. A major focus of this article is with the enduring harm that has been caused by the oral–manual debate concerning the role of hearing, speech, and sign language in the education of deaf children. I urge psychologists to contribute to the resolution of this destructive controversy. From a scientific and clinical point of view, psychologists are uniquely qualified to gather evidence and apply best practice concerning the role of various communication modalities during the early development of deaf children. In the context of equity, diversity, and inclusion and recent human rights legislation, it is of paramount importance to recruit and support students, faculty, and professionals who are themselves Deaf. This will include a commitment to intersectionality that will ensure that Deaf persons who identify with diverse ethnic groups and identities are well represented.

The monograph provides readers with a basic introduction to the anthropology of borders and presents a contemporary case of a Slovenian border region. The first chapters outlines many of the key lines of inquiry that influenced anthropological research on borders, border studies localized at selected border regions, and contemporary issues shaping anthropological research within the interdisciplinary field of border studies. The second half of this book is dedicated to presenting diverse aspects of the case of the Slovenian-Hungarian border around Goričko. These ethnographic chapters aim to provide a grounded understanding of the way that borders and border regimes have changed over the last decades, how these changes have informed the border region in diverse ways, and how border actors both experience and respond to these changes – through a myriad of their own border practices.

La presente investigación es un proyecto de dos años de duración, financiado por la Dirección de Investigación de la Universidad de Las Américas, Chile, que busca establecer la relación entre paisaje sonoro y memoria de una comunidad en base a los sonidos de una zona que ha sufrido una catástrofe natural. A partir de la reconstitución de las fuentes sonoras del momento de la catástrofe, es posible reconstruir la memoria acústica de la comunidad afectada. La investigación aborda los estudios de la catástrofe desde una variable acústica que permite acercarse al evento desde la experiencia sensible. Su foco en la comunidad y la percepción, centra la recopilación de información en la vivencia personal y la memoria para la reconstrucción de un suceso que no guarda registros. El caso de estudio es el terremoto y tsunami del 27 de febrero de 2010, en Caleta Tumbes, Talcahuano, Chile. Se ha utilizado una metodología basada en la percepción sonora con una muestra de personas en cuatro fases: 1) Mapa mental sonoro, 2) Itinerario, 3) Recolección de anécdotas, y 4) Escucha reactiva. El paisaje sonoro de la catástrofe depende de la experiencia sensible y se modifica de acuerdo a la memoria. A partir de la relación de los sonidos ambientales con la comunidad se identifican los cambios que puede ejercer una catástrofe natural en la apreciación acústica de un lugar. Al unir diferentes interpretaciones del evento del 27f aparecen elementos comunes que comienzan a reconstruir un panorama preciso en torno a una temporalidad de los hechos sonoros. Aquesta recerca és un projecte de dos anys de durada, finançat per la Direcció d'Investigació de la Universitat de les Américas, Xile, que busca establir la relació entre paisatge sonor i memòria d'una comunitat en base als sons d'una zona que ha patit una catàstrofe natural. A partir de la reconstitució de les fonts sonores de el moment de la catàstrofe, és possible reconstruir la memòria acústica de la comunitat afectada. La investigació aborda els estudis de la catàstrofe des d’una variable acústica que permet apropar-se a l’esdeveniment des de l’experiència sensible. El seu focus en la comunitat i la percepció, centra la recopilació d’informació en la vivència personal i la memòria per a la reconstrucció d’un succés que no guarda registres. El cas d’estudi és el terratrèmol i tsunami de el 27 de febrer de 2010, a Caleta Tumbes, Talcahuano, Xile. S’ha utilitzat una metodologia basada en la percepció sonora amb una mostra de persones en quatre fases: 1) Mapa mental sonor, 2) Itinerari, 3) Recol·lecció d’anècdotes, i 4) Escolta reactiva. El paisatge sonor de la catàstrofe depèn de l’experiència sensible i es modifica d’acord amb la memòria. A partir de la relació dels sons ambientals amb la comunitat s'identifiquen els canvis que pot exercir una catàstrofe natural en l'apreciació acústica d'un lloc. A l'unir diferents interpretacions de l'esdeveniment de l'27F apareixen elements comuns que comencen a reconstruir un panorama precís al voltant d'una temporalitat dels fets sonors. This research is a two-year project, funded by the Research Department of Universidad de Las Americas, Chile, which seeks to establish the relationship between soundscape and memory of a community based on the sounds of an area that has suffered a natural disaster. From the reconstitution of the sound sources of the moment of the catastrophe, it is possible to reconstruct the acoustic memory of the affected community. The research deals with catastrophe studies from an acoustic variable that allows the event to be approached from the sensitive experience. Its focus on community and perception, centers the collection of information on personal experience and memory for the reconstruction of an event that does not keep records. The case study is the earthquake and tsunami of February 27, 2010 in Caleta Tumbes, Talcahuano, Chile. A methodology based on sound perception has been used, with a sample of people in four phases: 1) Sound mental map, 2) Itinerary, 3) Collection of stories, and 4) Reactive listening. The soundscape of the catastrophe depends on the sensitive experience of its community and is modified according to memory. From the relationship of environmental sounds with the community, the changes that a natural catastrophe can make in the acoustic appreciation of a place are identified. By joining different interpretations of the 27f event, common elements appear that begin to reconstruct a precise panorama around a temporality of the sound facts.
