The Perception of Physical Activity in Ambulatory Persons with Late Effects of Polio: A Qualitative Study

Abstract: Maintaining regular physical activity (PA) can be challenging for persons with late effects of polio. This qualitative study of ambulatory persons with late effects of polio explored their perceptions of PA, and facilitators of and barriers to PA. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 15 persons and analyzed with content analysis using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) as framework. “…Long-term outcome studies of exercise within a comprehensive rehabilitation program suggest a prolonged positive effect on physical capacity and general health status, and benefits for physical, psychological, and functional outcomes. [50][51][52] An exercise program may also be beneficial for treating shoulder overuse symptoms. In fact, both exercise (home exercise program focused on strengthening hip and knee extensors) and lifestyle modification therapies designed to avoid shoulder overuse are effective in treating shoulder overuse symptoms in polio survivors.…”
