Abstract: There is a general consensus from prominent Peranakan Chinese scholars (such as Hwei-Fe'n Cheah in Phoenix Rising, 2010) that the phoenix has become an emblem of Peranakan Chinese identity, but scant research has been conducted on why this happened and how different players, cultural factors and historical events triggered this phenomenon.
