The Pediatric Risk of Mortality Score

Abstract: Objectives Severity of illness measures have long been used in pediatric critical care. The Pediatric Risk of Mortality is a physiologically based score used to quantify physiologic status, and when combined with other independent variables, it can compute expected mortality risk and expected morbidity risk. Although the physiologic ranges for the Pediatric Risk of Mortality variables have not changed, recent Pediatric Risk of Mortality data collection improvements have been made to adapt to new practice patte… Show more

“…It involved a large, multicenter cohort of children and young adults, which enabled a robust evaluation of relationships between exposure and outcome, and it had a prespecified protocol, operational definitions, and an analysis plan and enumerated complete standardized diagnostic criteria for acute kidney injury. The overall mortality of 3.4% is similar to the rate reported in epidemiologic studies conducted in pediatric ICUs, 26,27 which suggests that our cohort is representative.…”

“…Other data collected by medical staff in a prospective manner included diagnosis, reason for admission, illness severity scores at admission (Pediatric Risk of Mortality III, Pediatric Index of Mortality 2 [PIM2], and Pediatric Logistic Organ Dysfunction), [14][15][16] length of PICU stay, and mortality.…”

“…To overcome this, the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Collaborative Pediatric Critical Care Research Network (CPCCRN) designed the Functional Status Score (FSS) (58,60). FSS tasks abilities on a five-point scale across six domains of function, correlating well with a validated adaptive behavior assessment tool (60), as well as POPC but with more precision (75).…”
