The PDFI_SS Electric Field Inversion Software

Abstract: We describe the PDFI SS software library, which is designed to find the electric field at the Suns photosphere from a sequence of vector magnetogram and Doppler velocity measurements, and estimates of horizontal velocities obtained from local correlation tracking using the recently upgraded FLCT code. The library, a collection of Fortran subroutines, uses the "PDFI" technique described by Kazachenko et al. (2014), but modified for use in spherical, Plate-Carre geometry on a staggered grid. The domain over whic… Show more

“…Photospheric Doppler velocity field data are also adopted to help investigate magnetic cancellation at a cPIL. The corrected velocity field data are available in the data series cgem.doppcal 720s, which are corrected for the differential rotation and the Solar Dynamics Observatory spacecraft velocity (see Section 4 of Fisher et al 2020). The convective blueshift is further subtracted from the corrected data, which is saved in the DOPPBIAS keyword of the header file (for a detailed discussion, see Welsch et al 2013).…”

“…Future studies could use this overlap period to develop line-of-sight proxies for the vector magnetic field maps or summary parameters and extend these proxies backward in time. Future studies could also supplement the SMARP and SHARP data with other curated data sets that characterize, for example, subsurface properties of emerging active regions (Schunker et al 2016), the surface electric field (Kazachenko et al 2014;Fisher et al 2020), and atmospheric phenomena (Galvez et al 2019).…”

“…In this study, we performed a test to validate the PDFI SS electric field inversion method (Fisher et al 2020), using the photospheric data extracted from an interior-to-corona MHD simulation of the emergence of a twisted flux tube. Unlike the previous validation tests for the PDFI SS method that used just one snapshot of a rising flux tube in the solar interior (see, e.g.…”

“…Here we introduce the threshold to reduce the computational time and also for consistency with the previous studies. Moreover, magnetic field masks are used by the PDFI SS software when computing the Doppler contribution to the electric field (Fisher et al 2020). We performed several FLCT reconstructions with other threshold values (even one order of magnitude larger) and have not found a significant effect on the results.…”
