The Pattern of Malignant Disease in Ilesha, Western Nigeria

Abstract: The records of 465 patients admitted, or having biopsy, for malignant disease in one hospital over the 14 year period 1954-67, have been reviewed. Relative frequencies for different sites have been calculated and details recorded. The records of patients from Ilesha township, with a known population, were used to calculate incidence figures for the commonest tumours. Comparisons have been made with figures published from other West African hospitals. Carcinoma of stomach was the commonest form of cancer. A ple… Show more

“…1988, 1994; Sule & Mandong 1999). We observed that the incidence rates using the person‐years at risk showed a range between 1/100 000 in Ilesa (Mulligan 1970) and 7.2/100 000 in Ibadan (Williams & Edington 1967), from the earlier studies. Later studies showed 5.1/100 000 in Ile‐Ife (Akinola & Arigbabu 1994) and 3/100 000 in Ibadan (Akute 2000).…”

The earlier studies had shown a colon to rectum ratio of 1.2:1 (Williams & Edington 1967; Mulligan 1970); later work done, however, progressively showed that lesions in the rectum now overtook those of the colon in frequency; subsequently, colon to rectum ratios began to show figures like 1:1.3 (Mabogunje 1988; Edino et al . 2005), 1:1.6 (Adekunle & Abioye 1980; Obafunwa 1990; Ojo et al .…”

“…[38] Around that time in Ilesha, a town about 80 km from Ibadan, Mulligan reported 27 patients over a period of 14 years, about two patients a year. [39] Both studies presented cases seen between 1954 and 1967. Since then, there have been several reports from Ibadan, Ife, Enugu, Jos, Zaria, Kano, and Lagos.…”

“…Studies from Africa showed lower incidence compared to other parts of the world. [1][2][3] In an eight year review in Ibadan (South West Nigeria) between 1958-65, William & Edington reported that cancers of the large bowel and anus accounted for 3% of all malignant tumours. 3 Holcombe & Babayo also reported the low incidence of colorectal and gastric carcinomas compared to other malignancies in North East Nigeria.…”
