“…(b) Residual magnetic image, produced by a standard ternary combination of gradient‐based magnetic residual images (tilt angle, 1st vertical derivative, and analytical signal combined) portrays well the basement fabric and the major E–W Patos and NE–SW Portalegre shear zones, both of which influence basin‐bounding fault locations and orientations of the Cretaceous rift basins. See Fossen et al (2022) for more processing details and larger‐scale anomaly images.…”

“…950 Ma, late Neoproterozoic basins, Paleoproterozoic basement and Phanerozoic cover. This domain is strongly affected by conjugate sets of interconnected shear zones of both sinistral and dextral kinematics that connect the major Patos and Pernambuco shear zones (Fossen et al, 2022).…”

“…The Patos and Pernambuco shear zones are major dextral shear zones that developed in the wake of the main Brasiliano orogenic event, with peak activity around 590-560 Ma (Archanjo et al, 2008;Ganade et al, 2021). Their Neoproterozoic offsets appear to be on the order of two hundred kilometers for the Pernambuco shear zone and close to 350 km for the Patos shear zone (Fossen et al, 2022). Both shear zones show a range of ductile fabrics that developed from high to low temperature plastic deformation, with local brittle reactivation related to Cretaceous rifting (e.g., Françolin et al, 1994;Araujo et al, 2018;Miranda et al, 2020).…”
