The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 vs. the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression in Assessing Major Depressive Disorder

Abstract: Background: The Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAMD-17) has been used for several decades to assess the severity of depression. Multiple studies have documented defects in this scale and deemed it unsuitable for clinical evaluation. The HAMD-6, which is the abbreviated version of HAMD-17, has been shown to be effective in assessing the core symptoms of depression with greater sensitivity than HAMD-17. And the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) is suggested as an effective alternative to the HAMD-17 … Show more

“…Self-reported SCL-90, clinician-related HAM-A, and HAM-D are all widely used mental questionnaires in China, which are reported to have great potency in screening mental health, diagnosing, and estimating mental illness (22)(23)(24). In China, previous studies on SCL-90 focused primarily on students, doctors, nurses, police, and migrant workers, among others (24)(25)(26)(27).…”

“…Finally, clinicians may consider the use of other scales to measure symptoms of depression, such as the Hamilton Depression Rating or Beck Depression Inventory. However, recent studies have suggested that the PHQ-9 is more accurate and reliable in distinguishing the severity of depression when compared with the Hamilton Depression Rating (Ma et al 2021). When the PHQ-9 was compared with the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II), both scales were virtually interchangeable for assessing symptoms of depression.…”

“…CIDIā€™s validity is limited to clinical samples, but a clinical sample overestimates the prevalence of depression compared to a community sample [ 39 ]. Also, PHQ-9 is simple and reliable in measuring the severity of depression and can be used as an alternative to HDRS [ 40 , 41 ]. HDRS has been commonly used to screen depression for a long time but some of its items have limitations in identifying the severity of depression [ 42 ].…”
