“…Nobori et al found an anastomosing branch between the superior and inferior thyroid arteries in 45% of cadavers examined, a finding confirmed by arteriography by Mallette et al and Jianu et al, which could explain that ITA ligation does not necessarily impede circulation to the glands. Furthermore, Jander et al described an independent parathyroid artery that irrigated the inferior parathyroid glands, and Ander et al and Johansson et al found that even after complete occlusion of the ITA, the parathyroid blood flow only decreased to 40%. Therefore, biochemical hypocalcemia can be explained by temporary ischemia produced by manipulation of the gland, with a clear tendency to recovery in the long term due to redundant vascularization of the glands.…”

“…The blood may be supplied by small branches (4-5 mm long) of the ITA. 22 We adopted protective anatomy and preferentially preserved the blood supply sources related to the parathyroid glands. PGVPIST is generally conducted by 5 key steps.…”

“…Parathyroid glands are supplied by a single arterial feeder, sometimes referred to as the parathyroid artery [73,88,89]. If the artery from which this vessel arises can be catheterized, blood in the vascular bed of the gland can be completely replaced with contrast material.…”
