“…Larvae were found solely in the intestines. These results agree with Tolonen and Karlsbakk (2003) and Podolska and Horbowy (2003), who found the prevalence of Anisakis larvae in Norwegian spring spawners and Baltic herring, respectively, to increase during the feeding period.…”

“…It is most likely that the actinospores infect herring in shallow water. The actinospores are unlikely to infect herring in offshore oceanic areas as also verified by the negative findings of C. auerbachi in herring caught over great depths (Tolonen and Karlsbakk 2003).…”

“…Auerbach (1909) temporarily identified his specimens as Ceratomyxa sphaerulosa Thé-lohan, 1892, which originally was described from elasmobranchs. Ceratomyxa orientalis (Dogiel, 1948) and Ceratomyxa acadiensis Mavor, 1915 from C. harengus and White Sea herring Clupea pallasi marisalbi Berg may represent misidentifications of C. auerbachi, which appears to be the only species of Ceratomyxa in the gallbladder of Clupea harengus (MacKenzie 1987, Tolonen and Karlsbakk 2003, Rahimian 2007. Tolonen and Karlsbakk (2003) found C. auerbachi in herring from the wintering areas in fjords in Northern Norway, but did not find it in offshore oceanic nursery and feeding areas.…”

“…Costa et al (1991) found 1/5 juvenile herring from Scottish waters infected with O. orientalis, but six larger herring from the northeastern North Sea were uninfected. Tolonen and Karlsbakk (2003) and Rahimian (2007) examined high numbers (220 and 771) of adult and juvenile herring from Norwegian and Swedish waters but did not detect the parasite, although performing microscopy on kidney squash preparations.…”
