“…Awareness of the situation of change created by LTCs : As reported in 10 articles [ 7 , 32 , 33 , 34 , 35 , 38 , 39 , 40 , 49 , 51 ], family caregivers are directly involved in the lives of their relatives [ 32 ], especially spouses, where care is generally intensive, and many have no choice when it comes to assuming the role of caregivers [ 49 ]. The onset of the disease can sometimes come as a shock for family caregivers, precipitating a change in their lives ( Table 5 , T 49 –T 52 and Q 10 ).…”

“…The motivation to caring is an element that can condition acceptance, finding that the sense of responsibility for caring for relatives is the basis of this commitment [ 34 ] ( Table 5 , T 46 and Q 9 ). Sociocultural characteristics and the environment can influence the involvement and motivation of family caregivers [ 7 , 32 , 33 , 34 , 39 , 40 , 49 ], since accepting the new role makes it possible to achieve a situation of normality living with LTCs [ 34 , 38 ].…”

“…In addition, nearly 20% of frail adults are themselves unpaid caregivers of another adult with frailty, a serious illness or disability (Lee et al., 2018). Nonetheless, a small number of studies analysed the association between providing care and frailty (Alves, Flesch, Cachioni, Neri, & Batistoni, 2018; Dassel & Carr, 2016; de Peretti & Villars, 2015; Potier et al., 2018; Tomomitsu, Lemos, & Perracini, 2010; Uccheddu, Gauthier, Steverink, & Emery, 2019) and no studies adopted an European cross‐sectional perspective. Tomomitsu et al.…”

“…(2018) stated that older spousal caregivers were more likely to be in a pre‐frail stage and, using the health Frailty Index of 40 items, Uccheddu et al. (2019) concluded that transitions into spousal care‐giving have a detrimental effect on health. Along the same lines, Dassel and Carr (2016) found that caring for a spouse with dementia at the end of life increases the odds of becoming frail.…”

“…Divorce, in particular, may affect the contact with adult children or may even lead to intergenerational conflicts ( Daatland, 2007 ; Nazio & Saraceno, 2012 ), which—in turn—may reduce support potential and well-being. Widowhood, on the other hand, is likely to be preceded by spousal illness or disability, whereby solo spousal caregiving is quite frequent ( Bertogg & Strauss, 2020 ), and widowhood may both reflect cumulative strains due to caregiving ( Uccheddu et al, 2019 ; Wagner & Brandt, 2018 ) and relief from compassionate suffering after the death of the spouse ( Monin & Schulz, 2009 ). At the extreme end of a lack of social integration, a number of studies have shown that socially isolated individuals perform worse with regard to cognitive health ( Evans et al, 2018 ; Seeman et al, 2001 ), whereas individuals with high-quality social networks are protected better against cognitive decline ( Luo et al, 2021 ).…”
