The Ozone Hole Breakup in September 2002 as Seen by SCIAMACHY on ENVISAT

Abstract: An unprecedented stratospheric warming in the Southern Hemisphere in September 2002 led to the breakup of the Antarctic ozone hole into two parts. The Scanning Imaging Absorption Spectrometer for Atmospheric Chartography (SCIAMACHY) on the European Environmental Satellite (ENVISAT) performed continuous observations of limb-scattered solar radiance spectra throughout the stratospheric warming. Thereby, global measurements of vertical profiles of several important minor constituents are provided with a vertical … Show more

“…Santacesaria et al, 2001). Satellite remote sensing techniques to detect PSCs include solar occultation (McCormick et al, 1989;Fromm et al, 1997;Nedoluha et al, 2003), stellar occultation (Vanhellemont et al, 2005), limb scattering (von Savigny et al, 2005a), and IR emission spectroscopy (Spang et al, 2005). Groundbased measurements can provide continuous observations with high temporal resolution, but are limited to a certain location.…”

“…First results on PSC measurements with SCIAMACHY limb scattering observations were already presented in von Savigny et al (2005a). In this paper we present a more comprehensive description of the PSC detection method and its performance using the 2003 Southern Hemisphere (SH) PSC season as a sample data set.…”

“…This is achieved by measuring light from air masses at different tangent heights (THs) in a vertical scanning sequence and combining the measurements of all THs in an inversion algorithm. Several retrieval algorithms exist, for ENVISAT-SCIAMACHY limb measurements of scattered sunlight (see for example Sioris et al, 2004;Rozanov et al, 2005;von Savigny et al, 2005;Sioris et al, 2006;Puķīte et al, 2006;. Further, it is possible to acquire not only vertically but…”

“…In the current study version 3.0 of the DLR retrieval processor was employed. The second algorithm based on the so-called triplet method was developed at the Institute of Environmental Physics of the University of Bremen to perform the routine retrieval of the ozone vertical profiles (von Savigny et al, 2005b). This method will be further referenced to as the Stratozone algorithm.…”
