The Oxidation of N-Alkyl-2,4-dinitroanilines with Chromic Acid1a

Abstract: Several A-alkyl-2,4-dinitroanilines, which were obtained readily and in high yields by treatment of 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene with the corresponding aliphatic amines, were oxidized with chromic acid in 12A sulfuric acid to the corresponding carbonyl compounds and 2,4-dinitroaniline in good to excellent yields. Treatment of 2,4-dinitroaniline with 12A sulfuric acid at 125°g ave an almost quantitative yield of 2,4-dinitrophenol.
