The oxidation behavior of high-temperature aluminides

Abstract: Author's Note: All compositions are given in atomic percent unless otherwise indicated. The kinetics and mechanisms of oxidelayer formation on Ti-Al-X alloys, specifically have been studied. The activation energies for the oxide formation of each of the alloys used in this work were determined, and the values obtained were compared with those obtained by other researchers for identical alloys.

“…The performance of TiAl-based alloys as new structural materials depends strongly on their oxidation resistance. 1) Inadequate oxidation resistance limits the use of current TiAl-based alloys above about 800 C, however, because the external layer formed on the substrates is not a protective Al 2 O 3 scale, but a TiO 2 scale or a mixture of these two oxides.…”

“…4(a), (c) and (e) were about 3.7, 14.7, and 15.2 μm, respectively. Relatively thick, but adherent scales were formed at 1100 o C. The oxide scales formed progressively became denser and the oxide layer-matrix phase boundaries became more distinct, as the Temperature dependence of the parabolic rate constants of the sintered pure CrN powders, Cr2O3-forming kinetics [8], and CrN coatings [2,6,7] in air. scales thickened.…”
