The Oxford unicompartmental knee prosthesis: an independent 10-year survival analysis

Abstract: One hundred forty-nine medial prostheses were implanted in 140 patients between 1988 and 1996. After a mean of 67 months 28 patients had died, without the need for revision. Seventeen prostheses were lost to follow-up. Revision surgery using a total knee prosthesis was performed in 16 cases. In four others, a lateral prosthesis was implanted subsequently to a medial one. One of these four was revised to a total knee prosthesis 6 years later. In another four cases, late complications of the meniscal bearing wer… Show more

“…We observed three bearing dislocations within the first year, consistent with those reported in the literature [38,40,41]. The surgeon's fear of dislocation may lead to increase the polyethylene high and this may lead to an overcorrection of the deformation and consecutively to early arthritis progression in the lateral compartment as described in previous studies [11,38,40,41].…”

“…The surgeon's fear of dislocation may lead to increase the polyethylene high and this may lead to an overcorrection of the deformation and consecutively to early arthritis progression in the lateral compartment as described in previous studies [11,38,40,41]. We also observed five cases of progression of arthritis in the lateral compartment and within these five cases, three had early progression of osteoarthritis in the lateral compartment at a mean of 3.9 years related to overcorrection of the deformation.…”

“…Early survival studies of UKA demonstrated revision rates of 15% to 28% [23,34,44]. More recent articles report substantial increases in survival, with midterm survivorship for UKA of 84% to 98% (Table 1) [10,12,14,19,39,40,42,46,48,[57][58][59][60][61]. O'Rourke et al [43] followed by Price and Svard [49] documented long-term survival rates of UKA at 20 years of 84% and 91%, respectively.…”

“…The indication for surgery in all patients was medial osteoarthritis of the knee with pain only localised in the medial compartment. We followed indications and contraindications as recommended in the current literature [18,23]. The following main prerequisites had to be fulfilled for surgery: intact ligaments, esp.…”
