The Overlap of Poor Reading Comprehension in English and French

Abstract: This study examined overlap and correlates of poor reading comprehension in English and French for children in early French immersion. Poor comprehenders were identified in grade 3 in English and French using a regression method to predict reading comprehension scores from age, non-verbal reasoning, word reading accuracy, and word reading fluency. Three groups of poor comprehenders were identified: 10 poor comprehenders in English and French, 11 poor comprehenders in English, and 10 poor comprehenders in Frenc… Show more

“…Although this method is commonly used for identifying readers with poor word reading (e.g., Gao et al, 2019; Tong et al, 2015), it might be problematic given the distribution of children's reading scores and their measurement errors (Francis et al, 2005). In future work, it may be worth exploring a regression method to identify the overlap of poor reading comprehension in L1 and L2 by examining relationships between variables such as age, nonverbal reasoning, word reading, and word reading fluency (e.g., D'Angelo et al, 2020). A regression method would provide another approach to examining discrepancies between language and EF skills and word reading by distinguishing poor word readers from average and good readers.…”

“…Reading comprehension is a multifaceted process that requires the integration and coordination of several abilities, including word decoding (the ability to decipher or recognize written words) and speech or listening comprehension (the ability to comprehend what is decoded in spoken form) according to Gough and Tunmer (1986), as reported by Chen et al (2020). Reading comprehension is our ability to know and retain what we have read, and it requires a different form to comprehend what the pupils read.…”

“…In this field of study, over the last few years, research about reading comprehension in monolingual and bilingual populations has increased considerably (Choi et al, 2017;Spencer and Wagner, 2017;D'Angelo et al, 2020;Zhang et al, 2020;Zhao et al, 2021).…”
