The outcomes of total hip arthroplasty in rapidly progressive osteoarthritis: a systematic review

Abstract: Purpose Rapidly progressive osteoarthritis of the hip is an uncommon and poorly understood condition. No universal definition of RPOH exists, however, a loss of joint space of 2 mm or more per year or 50% or more in one year with no other cause can be classed as RPOH. Due to the rapid loss of joint space and associated bone loss, total hip arthroplasty is the only viable treatment option. The aim of this systematic review is to assess the outcomes of THA in RPOH. Methods … Show more

“…It was reported that SDS remains in decellularized tissues may act as a cytotoxic agent. 37,38 Consecutive washing in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and distilled water results in a significant reduction in SDS concentration. Moreover, applying Triton X-100 also successfully lowers the SDS concentration in the materials, thus improving the cytocompatibility of the decellularized tissues.…”

“…In some cases, the almost complete disappearance of the femoral head within a few months can be observed ( Figure 1 ) [ 4 ]. Generally, either the right or the left hip joint is affected, and it is mostly seen in elderly females aged between 70 and 75 years [ 5 ]. However, there are also reports of bilateral appearance.…”

“…However, there are also reports of bilateral appearance. Clinically, patients present with acute severe and rapidly worsening hip pain [ 4 , 5 ]. Today, multiple descriptive terms for this condition, such as rapidly destructive osteoarthritis (RDO), rapidly progressive coxarthrosis, Postel’s osteoarthritis, and rapidly progressive hip disease, have been proposed [ 3 ].…”

“…Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is becoming a more standardized procedure with high satisfactory rate in patients with hip osteoarthritis, osteonecrosis of the femoral head, and rapidly destructive coxarthrosis (RDC) 8–10 . However, patients with Parkinson's disease have a high dislocation rate of 8%–37% after THA 11,12 .…”

[8][9][10] However, patients with Parkinson's disease have a high dislocation rate of 8%-37% after THA. 11,12 Although the patients suffer from severe hip pain, they do not prefer undergoing surgery; however, their walking capacity can be comprised if they do not receive appropriate surgical treatment.…”
