The outcome of antenatal ultrasound diagnosed anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract in a large Danish birth cohort

Abstract: We recommend threshold values of APD at least 10 mm in the third trimester and in general at least 12 mm at first postnatal US for intensive follow-up. In this largest to date unselected birth cohort of AUDAKUT, the incidences of clinically significant AUDAKUT were in the lowest range of those previously published.

“…Another study showed that when a cohort had a normal antenatal ultrasound, VUR was the most common urological diagnosis identified after first time pyelonephritis (18). Previously, we reported the urological anomalies antenatally diagnosed in this population from 2006 to 2013 (11). Dilated VUR constituted 7% (6/88) of these anomalies (11).…”

“…From September 2004, all pregnant women in Denmark have been offered routine antenatal ultrasounds. The proportion of pregnant Danish women receiving this is high and was 99% in 2013 (11). We excluded patients born before March 1, 2005, to ensure that all the included patients were given the opportunity to have an antenatal diagnosis of urological anomalies at the routine scans.…”

“…Whereas the prevalence of abnormalities often depends upon the setting (e.g. tertiary care centers often have a higher prevalence of anomalies), some estimates place the frequency of renal anomalies at about one in 500 live births [9,10]. There is a broad spectrum of renal defects, from simple hydronephrosis to bilateral renal agenesis.…”

“…[1][2][3] Prenatal diagnosis includes dilatative genito-urinary tract malformation and, even if rarely, urinary masses. Aim of the study is to report our experience in the last three years about the endourological treatment of newborns affected by genito-urinary malformation implying critical urinary tract dilatation and by bladder mass requiring a neonatal operative management.…”
