The Origins of the Bronze Age of Southeast Asia

Abstract: White and Hamilton (J World Prehist 22: 357-97, 2009) have proposed a model for the origin of the Southeast Asian Bronze Age founded on seven AMS radiocarbon determinations from the Northeast Thai site of Ban Chiang, which would date the initial Bronze Age there to about 2000 BC. Since this date is too early for the derivation of a bronze industry from the documented exchange that linked Southeast Asia with Chinese states during the 2nd millennium BC, they have identified the Seima-Turbino 3rd millennium BC fo… Show more

“…However, the florescence of this craft occurred in the late second -early first millennium BCE, sparked by new incoming technological innovations (e.g. copper-base metallurgy) and by the demand for luxuries on the inter-regional exchange circuits of the SEAIS within the general process of social complexity growth that led to the formation of the IA regional polities (Pigott and Ciarla 2007;Higham et al 2011;Rispoli et al 2013; Ciarla forthcoming; Rispoli forthcoming B).…”

“…Ban Chiang has a legendary status within the history of archaeology in Southeast Asia owing to the dispute over the dating of the initial bronze production there. Bronze was originally placed at 3600 BC by Gorman and Charoenwongsa (1976) as a result of poorly-contexed radiocarbon dates from an early phase of burials with incised pottery and a bronze spearhead (Higham, Higham, Ciarla, et al 2011;Higham 2011aHigham , 1996bHigham : 7-12, 1996cHigham and Higham 2009b;White and Hamilton 2009;White 2006White , 1997White , 1986White et al 2004;Bayard 1996).…”

“…This is a flat region bounded by the Dang Raek Range to the south, the Phetchabun upland to the west, and the Mekong River to the north and east (Figure 1). Many of the archaeological sites are distinctive because of their encircling banks and moats (Higham, 1989(Higham, , 1996Boyd, Higham, & McGrath, 1999;Boyd, 2007;McGrath, Boyd, & Bush, 2008). There is a history of assuming these features to be of a predominantly defensive function, with further related assumptions regarding sociopolitical structure.…”
