The Origin of Laurentia: Rae Craton as the Backstop for Proto-Laurentian Amalgamation by Slab Suction

Abstract: Proto-Laurentia (i.e. pre-Grenvillian Laurentia) is an aggregate of six or more formerly independent Archean cratons that amalgamated convulsively in geons 19 and 18 (Orosirian Period), along with non-uniformly distributed areas of juvenile Paleoproterozoic crust. Subduction polarities and collision ages have been provisionally inferred between the major cratons (and some minor ones), most recently between the Rae and Hearne cratons. The oldest Orosirian collisions bound the Rae craton: 1.97 Ga (Taltson-Thelon… Show more

“…Paleoproterozoic orogens represent convergence zones between rigid lithospheric blocks/plates, typically with undocumented amounts of underthrust (subducted) oceanic lithosphere [e.g., Ross et al ., ; Hoffman , ]. These Paleoproterozoic orogens are associated with protracted assembly of supercontinents such as Laurentia at about 1.9–1.7 Ga [ Pehrsson et al ., ].…”

“…The Rae craton of the western Churchill Province (Fig. 1), northern Canada, is thought to be the locus of amalgamation for the Paleoproterozoic supercontinent Nuna (Hoffman, 2014), yet the current paucity of regional data means its Proterozoic assembly is poorly understood. Several large high-pressure granulite domains occur along the Rae craton's eastern margin (e.g., Sanborn-Barrie et al, 2001;Baldwin et al, 2007;Berman et al, 2007;Martel et al, 2008) within the Snowbird tectonic zone (STZ), which separates these rocks from the lower-grade Archean Hearne craton.…”

“…For example, Nuna assembly is largely constrained to between ca. 2.0-1.8 Ga, from the 1970 Ma Thelon orogen (Bowring and Grotzinger, 1992), with the Rae craton serving as the upper plate of the growing Laurentia (Hoffman, 2014) that was central to Nuna (Evans and Mitchell, 2011). Local orogeny continued through the Statherian, culminating with final suturing events in northern Australia during the early Calymmian (ca.…”
