In this study, optical microscopic analyses were applied to evaluate the thermal maturity, characteristics of solid bitumen, and other organic matter finely dispersed in Oligocene shales of the Menilite Formation in the Iwonicz-Zdrój–Rudawka Rymanowska Fold (IRF) and Bóbrka–Rogi Fold (BRF) of the Central Carpathian Synclinorium of the Silesian Nappe, Outer Carpathians, Poland. The investigation was carried out at two-unit depths of the shallow and deeper D-1 sections (430 m – IRF and 4,300 m – BRF) and outcrop samples (BRF). The mean random huminite reflectance values indicate immature conditions with respect to hydrocarbon generation in samples from the D-1 shallow section (VRo≈0.40%) and in the outcrop samples (VRo=0.36%). The degree of thermal maturity of the organic matter from a depth of about 4,300 m – BRF based on random vitrinite (VRo≈0.80%) and solid bitumen (BRo≈0.65%) reflectance measurements is associated with the “oil window” for petroleum generation. The organic components dispersed in the examined Menilite Formation samples are typical for hydrocarbon-prone organic matter, suggesting the dominant kerogen type II. The potential precursor maceral for solid bitumen occurring in the examined samples from the deeper D-1 sections is largely the alginite maceral.

The paper describes topical issues of a prospective method for coalmine methane utilization for obtaining an additional valuable energy resource for the regional development of coal-mining areas. It is noted that the development of the extraction of methane resources is very urgent and is of great economic importance for ensuring the energy independence of Ukraine. The experience and technologies of using methane and coalmine gas by global coal-mining companies are analyzed. Modern prospects and opportunities for using coal gas are studied. There is a need to transform the coalmine methane removal system and directions for maximizing the use of its resources in a wide range of concentrations in the composition of gas-air mixtures based on the development of innovative technologies to improve the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of functioning coal-mining enterprises. Attention is focused on the advantages of using gas hydrate technologies for obtaining additional energy resource under conditions of changing coalmine methane concentrations. The specifics of the process of mixed gas hydrate formation from gas mixtures of various geneses have been studied. It has been revealed that it is the coalmine gas-methane composition that determines and forms the basic condition for hydrate formation. The thermobaric conditions for the hydrate formation process at different methane concentrations in gas mixtures of degassing systems have been experimentally determined. The results obtained are the basis for further research on efficiency of creating gas hydrates from coalmine methane and determining its minimum permissible concentration in the gas mixture of degassing systems according to the technological and economic criteria of hydrate formation.

Initial crustal collision between Africa and Eurasia in the middle Eocene – early Oligocene enclosed a semi‐restricted Paratethyan seaway of linked basins and platforms across a region stretching from the Eastern Alps to the South Caspian Sea. As the African Plate continued to advance north during the later Neogene, the seaway shrank into a series of more isolated basins separated by the rising Alpine – Carpathian – Caucasus fold‐thrust belts. Organic‐rich oil‐prone Paratethyan source rocks of middle Eocene (Kuma Formation and equivalents) and Oligocene – early Miocene (Maikop and Menilite Beds) ages, and more gas‐prone post‐orogenic mid‐upper Miocene shales, subsequently charged over 2500 accumulations across the region with combined recoverable reserves of 95 billion brl oil‐equivalent (B boe). These accumulations are clustered in discrete petroleum provinces, each with a distinct tectono‐stratigraphic architecture and comprised of one or more petroleum systems. The most critical of these factors appears to be the quality and distribution of source rocks and post‐charge structural modification.
