The Orientation and Navigational Skills of Young Children: An Application of Two Intervention Strategies

Abstract: Orienteering is a navigational sport using large–scale maps (1: 15000) and a compass to locate, as quickly as possible, a series of control points in a pre–defined order. Orientation of self and map are fundamental skills in the sport of orienteering. The traditional teaching or coaching of this skill is based on a hierarchical model. This model introduces the concept of location of self by initial reference to landmarks, then routes linking individual landmarks followed by configurations of these landmarks an… Show more

“…1 These results supported the argument that it is simpler to use one set of information, that is, the compass and Magnetic North alignment, for orientation. Three groups of children followed different intervention program-mes based on the use of: (i) a compass-based strategy programme, (ii) a landmarkbased strategy programme and (iii) a programme based on both compass and landmark strategies.…”

“…However, when given the choice, a large percentage of the children from the combination of strategies programme chose to use the compass-based strategy to complete a complex route across the uniform grid. 1 These results supported the argument that it is simpler to use one set of information, that is, the compass and Magnetic North alignment, for orientation. 3…”

“…In our work with this paper, we have not been able to find extensive literature on this subject, and more specific literature concerned with people experiencing disorientation in the outdoors appears to be lacking. We have found literature concerning spatial disorientation, but it is linked to other research areas like the study of neurodegenerative disorders (for example Monacelli et al, 2003;Tu et al, 2015;Cammisuli and Crowe, 2018;Puthusseryppady et al, 2022), other transport contexts like aviation and pilot training (for example Benson, 1973;Pike, 1992;van Erp et al, 2006;Lewkowicz and Biernacki, 2020;Hao et al, 2022), experiments in simulation or controlled laboratory settings (for example Dariusz, 2018;Lewkowicz and Kowaleczko, 2019;Landman et al, 2022) or within specific activities or even animal navigation (for example Walsh and Martland, 1993;Matthews, 1997).…”
