The burial of organic matter within lake sediments can be a significant component of landscape carbon cycling. Whether organic matter deposited in lake sediments is sequestered or mineralized depends on factors limiting the decomposition rate of organic matter, such as temperature and the availability of oxygen. In stratified lakes, the distribution of temperature and oxygen is determined by the depth of the thermocline, and therefore sediment organic matter burial should be sensitive to changes in thermocline depth. Using a survey of more than 30 lakes over 3 years in the Alaskan Arctic, we found that thermocline depth during the summer was positively correlated with water transparency. Furthermore, using sediment incubations from 3 lakes, we found that variation in sediment oxygen demand is primarily affected by variation in temperature and the availability of oxygen with limited effect of the source of the sediments. Because variation in temperature and oxygen concentration in stratified lakes is mainly determined by the depth of thermocline, these results indicate that changes in transparency can have indirect effects on the rate of organic matter mineralization in lakes. A reduction in thermocline depth that results from decreased lake transparency may decrease the breakdown of sediment organic matter and increase the storage of organic carbon in lake sediments.

Pelagic food web processes with focus on phyto-and bacterioplankton dynamics were followed in a high Arctic lake on Ziegler Island, Franz Joseph Land archipelago, during July and August 1996. The oligotrophlc, permanently ice-covered lake is characterized by a rather short pelagic food web with rotifers representing the highest trophic level. Phytoplankton biomass and net primary production averaging 1.8 pg chl a 1-' and 22 pg C 1-' d-', respectively, decreased dunng the investigation period. Photosynthetic extracellular release (P,,) corrected for bacterial uptake was high and contributed between 31 % (July) and 96% (August) of total primary production. The abundance of bacteria (9.3 to 17.3 X 10' ml-l) and flagellates (7.8 to 17.3 X 10' ml-l) varied within a narrow range. Bacterioplankton production ranging from 1.2 to 3.9 pg C 1-' d-' and bacterial growth rates (0.1 to 0.3 d-') increased with increasing % P,,, indicating that algal exudates are the major carbon source for bacterioplankton. Bacterial carbon demand (assuming a 50% growth efficiency) amounted to 19% of gross pelagic primary production (P,,,, + P,,) and 31 % of P,, during the investigation period. Evidence was found that bacterioplankton metabolism responds quickly to slight increases in temperature (1.2 to 2.0°C) with increased growth. Overall, production rates of phyto-and bacterioplankton in this high Arctic lake are simdar to other Arctic lakes studied thus far, and the food web structure is even simpler than in most lakes at similar latitudes.

Organic matter mineralization rates were measured by the accumulation of DIC + CH, in the water overlying intact cores taken from littoral and protimdal sediments of nine Quebec lakes. The variability in areal carbon mineralization is much greater within lakes than among lakes varying in trophic richness. Organic matter mineralization in littoral sediments is more variable and, on average, threefold higher than in the profundal sediments. Sixty percent of the variation in mean summer mineralization rates is explained by site depth, a surrogate variable that incorporates the effect of temperature and may also be reflecting substrate quality and(or) supply. The lakespecific characteristics most strongly correlated to the residuals of the regression with depth are catchment area-tolake area ratio (CA : LA) and water residence time. In lakes with a larger CA : LA and a shorter residence time, the amount and(or) the quality of organic matter settling to the sediments at a given depth may be reduced, resulting in the lower observed mineralization rates. Total mineralization in the sediments is, not surprisingly, greater in larger lakes but the rate per unit area is smaller, reflecting the decreased importance of the littoral zone. More than half (54-100%) of the DIC + CH, produced in the sediments is from the littoral zone. Yet, because of the large biomass in epilinmetic waters, the littoral sediments account for <20% of the sum of metabolism in the epilimnetic water column and underlying sediments. The relative importance of the sediments in metabolism in lakes is a function of both the trophy and lake morphometry. In deep lakes a smaller proportion of total respiration occurs in the sediments than in shallow lakes, and in eutrophic lakes the sediments account for a smaller proportion of total respiration than in oligotrophic lakes.
