The Optimization of Total Laboratory Automation by Simulation of a Pull-Strategy

Abstract: Laboratory results are essential for physicians to diagnose medical conditions. Because of the critical role of medical laboratories, an increasing number of hospitals use total laboratory automation (TLA) to improve laboratory performance. Although the benefits of TLA are well documented, systems occasionally become congested, particularly when hospitals face peak demand. This study optimizes TLA operations. Firstly, value stream mapping (VSM) is used to identify the non-value-added time. Subsequently, batch … Show more

“…Although patient satisfaction is key in directing process improvement initiatives in healthcare systems [ 128 , 129 , 130 ], it is rarely measured and monitored in LH–DT interventions. This finding is consistent with previous studies highlighting that most LH interventions tracked the effects on throughputs but disregarded patient satisfaction outcomes [ 94 , 101 , 131 ].…”

“…Its implementation of value stream mapping (Li et al, 2015;Sanders et al, 2016). There are also articles that study the use of the big data analytics software in the development of the Quality Function Deployment (QFD) and the use of simulation software for process optimization in LSS projects (Yang et al, 2015;Rane et al, 2017).…”

“…Others integrated simulation and VSM, with a simulation model being generated from a VSM map (Jia and Perera 2009;Lian and Van Landeghem 2007), or even created VSM from simulation models (Goienetxea Uriarte et al 2019;Solding and Gullander 2009). Still, other studies included the combination of VSM and simulation with the study of Kanban (Sabaghi, Rostamzadeh, and Mascle 2015), or CONWIP (Yang et al 2015). There were also combinations with additional techniques such as the use of constraint programming (Samant, Mittal, and Prakash 2018), or 3D-post simulation visualisation to support decision-making (Moghadam, Barkokebas, and Al-Hussein 2014).…”
